So most of you know we're pretty clueless when it comes to home repairs. Here's my latest "duh" moment:
So anyway, I'm admitting this because I want to know if any of you know about water softeners. This guy said that because it's just sat their for years that it's not worth fixing. (Something about the sponges growing algae and bacteria which could make us sick.) He didn't actually look in the tank. He just said it would need to be replaced.
Do you think he is just trying to sell us a $1000 water softener or is it really not worth fixing?
I've heard the same thing. They have to take it all apart and then replace all the filter media because too much bacteria has damaged it, and the filter media is an expensive part of the whole construction, so at that point, you may as well by a new one, otherwise something else might fail after you fix everything. i don't know for sure though. good luck! (that was a pretty funny story though. here's one for you: when i first bought my condo they come and do a three month check to see if anything broke in the first three months, i told them i wanted a new dishwasher door because where all the buttons were it had bubbled up, it looked terrible. he proceeded to remove the protective plastic sheet from shipping, and voila, good as new. it was super embarassing.)
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking I'd go with his recommendation. Just the thought of the potential for bacteria and algae surging through your pipes is a nasty thought. Good luck!
ReplyDeletewah who, you have a blog! i am so excited. i don't think i knew. i really love keeping in touch this way cause otherwise how would i spend my time during my graveyard shift? making phone calls is out of the question:)
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing this story despite your embarassment, it gave me a good chuckle. i am pretty sure we don't have an unplugged water softner hiding downstairs only because our handyman renter would know better. otherwise we would be in the same boat as you. i wish we had one though because i have heard it does wonders for eczema and my poor girls get it so bad and now even baby Soren does too, doh! stupid eczema!
that's crazy that you just did a Stranger Danger FHE as well. what a small world. after our lesson Elora keeps talking about Strangers, too. When MaryAnn bore her testimony Sunday and talked about that lady knocking at her door and calling the police. Elora said to me that she did the right thing cause you shouldn't open the door to strangers. so funny. she also keeps telling me now everytime she sees a mom with kids that if she were lost they would be safe to talk to. i am just glad she is learning these important lessons. can you believe my girls did that? what were they thinking!
anyway, i don't usually make such long responses to posts but this was my first of hopefully many on you blog. have a great day!
